How to choose a loft bed

  • Check the age: loft beds are not suitable for children under six.
  • Check the ceiling: a child needs room to sit up in bed. For our tallest loft bed, plan for a ceiling of about 240 cm or more.
  • Decide what goes underneath: some of ours have a desk or a sofa bed built in. Others leave the floor free for your own desk, a play corner or low storage.
  • Respect the mattress limit: the mattress must stay at least 16 cm below the guard rail, so keep to the maximum thickness in the manual.

Common mistakes when choosing a loft bed

  • Forgetting the ladder side: the ladder needs free floor in front of it, so keep it clear of a door.
  • Placing it under a light or fan: nothing should hang within reach of the top bed.
  • Measuring only the frame: with its angled ladder, our single Sophie loft bed takes about 165 cm of floor across.

What size loft bed for a small bedroom?

A loft bed with a desk underneath gives your child a bed and a work corner on about 2 square metres of floor. Our corner desk version keeps the desk inside the bed's own footprint. Check the ceiling first.

Dimensions and materials

  • Height: 174 to 190 cm.
  • Frame width: about 105 cm, or about 215 cm for the double with its staircase.
  • Mattress: 90x200, or 140x200 on the double.
  • Materials: white MDF (wood fibreboard), or solid pine with a white lacquer on the double.
  • Included: a slatted base, and a ladder or a staircase. The sofa bed version also has seat and back cushions.

Our range of loft beds

Goes well with

  • A desk or wardrobe underneath: the loft beds without a built-in desk leave room for a desk or a wardrobe.
  • Mid sleepers: a mid sleeper is lower, so a child climbs in more easily and still has room to play underneath.
  • Bunk beds: for two children in one room, see our bunk beds.
