How to choose a storage cabinet

  • Depth for what you store: folded clothes, linen and boxes fit in a cabinet of about 35 to 50 cm deep. Files and books need even less.
  • Shelves you can move: adjustable shelves let you fit tall boxes or folders. Check how many shelves come with the cabinet.
  • Shelf load: a narrow particleboard shelf often holds 10 to 15 kg, so keep heavy items low.
  • Doors and space: hinged doors need free floor in front to open. Measure the gap before you order.
  • Wall fixing: tall cabinets must be fixed to the wall with the supplied fitting.

Common mistakes when choosing a storage cabinet

  • Heavy things at the top: this makes a tall cabinet top-heavy. Keep the weight low.
  • Overloading a shelf: too much weight bends a shelf, so spread heavy items over several shelves.
  • Forgetting the doors: a door that hits the bed or another door only opens halfway.
  • Skipping the wall fixing: a cabinet that seems stable can still tip when a child climbs it.

What size storage cabinet for a small room?

Choose a slim one-door cabinet of 40 to 50 cm, such as the Lucas. Leave enough room in front to walk past and open the door.

Dimensions and materials

  • Width: 40 to 120 cm.
  • Height: 148 to 184 cm, most around 180 cm.
  • Depth: about 36 to 57 cm.
  • Doors and shelves: one to four doors, with 4 or 8 shelves.
  • Finishes: white, Sonoma oak (a light oak look), grey oak, anthracite (dark grey), beige and sage green.
  • Material: mostly particleboard, with a back panel.

Caring for your storage cabinet

Wipe the cabinet with a dry or slightly damp cloth, and avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners. Do not leave water on the surface.

Frequently asked questions

How high should a storage cabinet be?

Most of ours are around 180 cm high. Under a sloping ceiling, measure the wall at its lowest point first.

How wide should a storage cabinet be?

Ours are 40 to 120 cm wide. Leave space in front for the doors to open.

How deep should a storage cabinet be?

Ours are about 36 to 57 cm deep. A shallow cabinet leaves more room to walk past, and a deeper one holds bulky boxes.

Which storage cabinet suits a hallway?

A shallow one. Our shallowest is 36 cm deep.

Which material should you choose for a storage cabinet?

Most of ours are particleboard with a wood-look or white finish, which you wipe clean with a damp cloth.
