How to choose a bar stool

• Seat height: measure your counter, then take off 25 to 30 cm. A 90 cm kitchen counter needs a seat of about 65 cm. A bar of 100 to 110 cm needs one of about 75 cm.
• A footrest: at this height, most people cannot rest their feet on the floor, so a footrest keeps your legs from dangling.
• Width along the counter: allow about 60 cm of counter per stool.
• A backrest: a back gives more support during longer meals.

Common mistakes when choosing a bar stool

• The wrong height for your counter: a tall bar stool at a kitchen counter leaves no room for your knees. Measure before you order.
• No footrest: dangling feet press the seat edge into your thighs.
• Too many stools: they bump into each other, so count the stools against the counter length.
