What a box spring bed is

A box spring is a bed built in layers rather than as a frame with a base dropped into it.

• A sprung base : the box itself contains springs, so it flexes instead of sitting rigid.

• A mattress on top : the mattress works with the base rather than resting on slats.

• Often a topper as well : a third layer that sets the final feel of the bed.

• A taller bed overall : the stacked construction sits higher than a slatted frame.

• Upholstered sides : the base is covered, so no frame is visible around the mattress.

How it differs from a slatted base

The two support a mattress in different ways, and they feel different to sleep on.

• Springs against slats : a box spring absorbs movement through its own suspension.

• Height : a box spring usually sits noticeably higher, which suits getting in and out.

• No visible frame : there is no headboard-and-rails construction holding it together.

• Moving it : a box spring comes in large sections rather than flat-packed parts.

• Replacing parts : a slatted base can be swapped on its own; a box spring is a unit.

Measuring before you buy

Because the construction is layered, the finished height is easy to underestimate.

• Total height : add base, mattress and topper together, not just the mattress.

• Sitting height : the top of the mattress around 55 to 65 cm suits most people.

• Doorways and stairs : the base sections are bulky and do not fold.

• Floor area : measure the full footprint, since there is no frame overhang to allow for.

Bedding and upkeep

A box spring changes a few practical things about looking after the bed.

• Deeper fitted sheets : the extra height often needs a deeper sheet than a standard bed.

• Rotate the mattress : turning it end to end spreads wear across the surface.

• Vacuum the base : upholstered sides collect dust the way a fabric sofa does.

• Check the feet : the legs carry the whole stack and are worth tightening now and then.
